I have worked in Human Resources for almost 20 years now. I have seen a lot of things. I have hired thousands of people, helped them return from work, fired people, negotiated salaries, broke up a near fist fight and had to sift through a 45 page letter from an employee who was tired of the state of the kitchen and proposed an 8 part plan to fix it.
Someone asked me the other day what the stupidest thing I had seen a company do. My answer was simple. The stupidest thing I have seen companies do is not provide…
We have a maternity leave crisis in workplaces.
Here is the issue:
Workplaces keep screaming these things:
And women keep leaving. Small employers. Big employers. No one is doing it right.
I surveyed over 1000 Canadian women. They worked for — small companies, unionized companies, big banks, manufacturing, consumer packaged goods, healthcare, profit, non profit.
The message was clear — the way you handle maternity leave is broken.
Here are some of our statistics:
Women matter. The jobs we do are just as important as those done by our male coworkers, our value to the workforce is equal, yet in nearly all industries, we are paid less than our male counterparts, sidelined for having children, and told we are hysterical, angry and irrational when we object to the roll back of legislation designed to protect this equality.
But we are equal, more importantly so are our voices. Our votes count. So remember that when we head to the polls in 2022. We matter. …
When I started my business I joined a lot of women’s groups. I listened and learned and conformed.
It was a normal thing to ask speakers to chat with groups for free, do a presentation and more in order to gain access to “audience” and “engagement” I did it too. I asked people to participate in this practice.
And you know what I still do — but here is where we need to draw a HARD line in the sand.
If you are offering a free service — increasing…
I say this to you with love. I say this to you with over 15 years of both working for employers and with women on how to Ask For More. And you know what that has shown me? You absolutely deserve more. So much more. And that is what I want for you — so here are the top 8 things you need to know about salary negotiation.
Dear Stephen Lecce, Doug Ford and all the other elected officials who are not listening,

Premier Ford, Ministers and Elected Officials,
I am writing to tell you I am tired, my friends and family are exhausted, the 1000s of Ontario parents who make up a vast majority of the workforce are frustrated, because it feels like once again we are being pushed back into the circumstances of the start of the pandemic. But the frustration comes because we don’t have to be, we don’t need to be. We know more now than we did back in March, but we need to act now to ensure the right kind of change happens.
Two weeks ago, Ontario…
Here is something that a lot of career coaches, salary negotiation people and random strangers miss. Salary negotiation starts the moment you answer that horrible little question “what is your current salary?” or “please provide a salary range”
But let me start by explaining this process to you. It is a process that corporations explain in ways that don’t make any sense. When HR people say that they “need to know you are in their hiring range” that means they don’t know what they are talking about and have been programmed to spout things they don’t understand.
The other morning while trying to simultaneously — do the dishes, get the cat away from the pile of unfolded laundry and check the morning news — this article popped up as “recommended for me”
As I was in the midst of my morning routine I thought it would be interesting to compare. If like me, you do not have the time to read the whole article — let me give you the highlight reel.
Here we go:
#1–4:45 Wake up and have a bowl of quinoa cereal. …
Now to start — I am a Career Coach & HR expert. People pay me money to help improve their hiring processes, create an interview process that makes people WANT to work for their company and basically tell them what to do.
But this list is yours for free — and are the top reasons people hate your hiring process. Ok — here goes.
